Newcastle University
STEM Outreach Officer
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
I'm currently the Chemistry Outreach Officer in the School of Chemistry at Newcastle University, a Russell Group research-intensive University in the north of England, UK. I am a former chemistry schoolteacher with over 25 experience. My job is to promote chemistry to all - mainly schoolchildren of all ages but I do deliver events for the general public, community groups etc. - anyone who'll listen!

I am currently developing learning resources using two well-established worldwide research data platforms, the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and the Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe). At BCCE I am both delivering a symposium talk and running a drop-in workshop to allow delegates to try out the resources we have produced with the CSD project. I am nterested in talking to anyone else who has/is developing similar resources to share ideas/avoid reinventing the wheel - both with crystallographic data in general and especially with protein structures, which is a newly started project this year with the PDBe!

Also interested in finding any laboratory practicals which I can use either as is or adapt to extend the range offered in my Chemistry Outreach Laboratory, a high tech laboratory equipped to the standard of an undergraduate or graduate research lab but used by me for school classes to visit the University and try out undergraduate style experiments.
