Dr Peter Hoare

Newcastle University
STEM Outreach Officer
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
I'm currently a STEM Outreach Officer in the SAgE Faculty at Newcastle University, a Russell Group research-intensive University in the north of England, UK. I am a former chemistry teacher with over 30 years teaching experience, 20 years full time in school.
My job is to promote STEM subjects, including chemistry, to all - mainly schoolchildren of all ages but I do deliver events for the general public, community groups, teacher CPD, etc. - anyone who'll listen!
I am also both an A level Chemistry exam marker (25 years) and a Practical Adviser (4 years) for one of the main UK Exam Boards. I have also designed and/or delivered CPD sessions for the RSC, Regional SLCs and AQA and I am also a freelance consultant for CLEAPSS.

I have developed post-16 learning resources using two well-established worldwide research data platforms, the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and the Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe). These resources have been peer-produced by either year 12 Nuffield Research Placement students or final year MChem project students.

At ASE I am delivering a talk/workshop, co-hosted with my colleague Dr David Armstrong from the PDBe, to allow delegates to try out the resources we have produced with the PDBe project.

I currently have a third project running with the LIPID MAPS database, located at Cardiff University, to develop learning resources for post-16 biology on the structure and function of lipids (!). These resources were peer-produced by two year 12 Nuffield Research Placement students in summer 2020 and can be found here: http://tiny.cc/lipidLR from September 2020 as we are aware that Biomolecules is an early topic in AS biology teaching in the UK.

I am interested in talking to anyone else who has/is developing similar resources to share ideas/avoid reinventing the wheel - both with crystallographic data in general and especially with protein and/or lipid structures, which is a newly started project this summer with LIPID MAPS! I am also delivering a presentation on Thursday 1500 showcasing the demonstrations from my popular Colourful Chemistry lecture, which debuted at the 2016 ASE in Birmingham. This lecture contains a number of classic chemistry demonstrations which illustrate key chemistry topics in KS3-5 - all are easy to set up and deliver and can all be delivered in non-laboratory settings if desired (very useful in the current circumstances) - the lecture is regularly delivered in halls, classrooms and lecture theatres in schools and other host venues.
